Visitors and exhibitors from twelve countries, twice the number of nations in relation to 2016, represented a rise of about 10% in the number of participants in comparison with the previous edition.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The bioeconomy was an overarching theme at Green Rio 2017, and Roberto Rodrigues, former Agriculture Minister, an Ambassador for Cooperatives at the FAO and the Coordinator of the Agribusiness Center at the Get\u00falio Vargas Foundation, gave the opening address for the event to a packed auditorium. Roberto Rodrigues spoke about Brazil\u2019s privileged position in relation to the possibilities of the new Bioeconomy market. \u201cIts potential is related to competitive and sustainable agricultural production, abundant natural resources, biodiversity, advanced production of renewable fuels, and very dynamic biotechnology, especially in the agricultural area.\u201d With regard to the cooperatives\u2019 role in the bioeconomy, Roberto Rodrigues pointed out that:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>50 million Brazilians, including their families, are directly connected with one of the 6,600 cooperatives in Brazil.<\/li>\n<li>361,000 professionals currently work at cooperatives.<\/li>\n<li>50% of the Brazilian agricultural production has some connection with a cooperative.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">The cooperative movement is responsible for almost 11% of the Brazilian agricultural GDP (gross domestic product).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-29353 alignnone\" title=\"Entrevista-estande-OCB1-650\" src=\"http:\/\/planetaorganico.agropecuaria.ws\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Entrevista-estande-OCB1-650.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"434\" srcset=\"http:\/\/planetaorganico.agropecuaria.ws\r\n\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Entrevista-estande-OCB1-650.jpg 650w, http:\/\/planetaorganico.agropecuaria.ws\r\n\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Entrevista-estande-OCB1-650-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Brazilian cooperatives were represented in an area sponsored by the OCB (Brazilian Cooperatives Organization) system; and Neilton Silva, Chairman of the SICOOB (Cooperative Financial System of Brazil) for the State of Rio de Janeiro, took part in the Panel on <strong>Green Markets and Sustainable Purchasing<\/strong>, whose moderator was Geiza Rocha. Neilton Silva spoke about the importance of the Credit Cooperative for local and regional development. The panel also had the participation of Frank Kraemer (GIZ), coordinator of a project that promotes a strategy to reduce deforestation in the Amazon region, involving the States of Acre, Amazonas, Amap\u00e1 and Par\u00e1; and Cristina Cuiab\u00e1lia, Manager of the Sesc Pantanal Private Nature Reserve, with 65 research projects already carried out, and with the academic training of over 170 researchers coming from almost 50 education and research institutions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-29354\" title=\"Painel-Mercados-Verdes-650\" src=\"http:\/\/planetaorganico.agropecuaria.ws\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Painel-Mercados-Verdes-650.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"348\" srcset=\"http:\/\/planetaorganico.agropecuaria.ws\r\n\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Painel-Mercados-Verdes-650.jpg 650w, http:\/\/planetaorganico.agropecuaria.ws\r\n\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Painel-Mercados-Verdes-650-300x160.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">_________________________________<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>The Presence of the German Bioeconomy Delegation at Green Rio<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In order to present its national strategy \u2013 \u201cBioeconomy 2030\u201d \u2013 in which 2.4 billion Euros have already been invested, a German delegation, led by the Bioeconomy and Forests director of the German Agriculture Ministry, Clemens Neumann, sponsored the first German-Brazilian Bioeconomy Workshop, held during the Green Rio event.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the <strong>German-Brazilian Bioeconomy Workshop<\/strong> potential partnerships between the two countries were presented and discussed. Regina Diniz, of SEBRAE \u2013 a service that supports medium and small businesses \u2013 presented SEBRAE\u2019s cosmetics program, especially the Structuring Project for Amazon Forest Based Cosmetics, in which seven of Brazil\u2019s States participate. In the vegetable garden workshops, herbs were planted in green coconut shells, so as to reuse the material disposed of on beaches and to find a cost-free, ecological end use for it. In the gastronomic workshops, fruit juices were prepared, as well as toast seasoned with the different kinds of herbs from the vegetable garden workshops. \u00a0At the SESC booth there were nutritionists, and it was always very crowded with people visiting the event.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-29246\" title=\"Estande-SESC\" src=\"http:\/\/planetaorganico.agropecuaria.ws\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Estande-SESC.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"211\" srcset=\"http:\/\/planetaorganico.agropecuaria.ws\r\n\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Estande-SESC.jpg 650w, http:\/\/planetaorganico.agropecuaria.ws\r\n\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Estande-SESC-300x97.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">_________________________________<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the panel on <strong>Beauty, Fashion and Sustainability<\/strong>, whose moderator was Fabiana Souza Melo (SEBRAE RJ), Newman Costa, also from SEBRAE, gave a presentation on \u201cPIRARUCU: a sustainable alternative for the fashion world\u201d, pointing out the total use of this Brazilian fish, which is farm raised, and also caught in the wild under government control.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The partners of Sal\u00e3o Crystal, Alfredo Pedrosa and Mandy Cruz, showed their concern about how containers for shampoo, dyes and other products used at beauty parlors are disposed of.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Fabiana called attention to the growth of small companies that already operate in the disposal of fabrics and packaging, occupying space in the sector. Alvaro Werneck of Planeta Org\u00e2nico was the moderator. F\u00e1bio presented data on the appreciation of land receiving investments through sustainable management. They also participated with natural cosmetics.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-29250\" title=\"EStande-Granado\" src=\"http:\/\/planetaorganico.agropecuaria.ws\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/EStande-Granado.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"298\" srcset=\"http:\/\/planetaorganico.agropecuaria.ws\r\n\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/EStande-Granado.jpg 450w, http:\/\/planetaorganico.agropecuaria.ws\r\n\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/EStande-Granado-300x198.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">_________________________________<\/p>\n<p>In 2017, Green Rio inaugurated the Green Latin America area, with the support of CEAL (Entrepreneurial Council for Latin America) and the participation of Cosmetic Valley (France), the National Agricultural Society, the Brazilian Association of Beverage and Food Exporters (A.B.B.A.), the Brazil-Germany Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and Interfreight (international logistics).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">_________________________________<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Also in relation to the \u201corganics\u201d theme, a well-attended panel on the <strong>Organic Seed Market<\/strong> was organized by the Organics Intelligence Center (CI Org\u00e2nicos) \/ National Agricultural Society (SNA), in partnership with Planeta Org\u00e2nico. The panel\u2019s moderator was Sylvia Wachsner, CI Org\u00e2nicos coordinator; and Rog\u00e9rio Dias, the Agroecology coordinator of the Agriculture and Food Supply Ministry (MAPA) started the debate with a historical presentation on seeds.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Technologies in agroecology and organic raw materials could also be found at the Agriculture Ministry\u2019s booth, in partnership with Sebrae RJ.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-29372\" title=\"Banner-Painel-Mercado-de-Sementes-Organicas-\" src=\"http:\/\/planetaorganico.agropecuaria.ws\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Banner-Painel-Mercado-de-Sementes-Organicas-.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"314\" srcset=\"http:\/\/planetaorganico.agropecuaria.ws\r\n\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Banner-Painel-Mercado-de-Sementes-Organicas-.gif 650w, http:\/\/planetaorganico.agropecuaria.ws\r\n\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Banner-Painel-Mercado-de-Sementes-Organicas--300x144.gif 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Producers, researchers and the global organic seed marketing company BEJO took part in the panel. In the opinion of Luiz Carlos Dematt\u00ea, general coordinator of the Natural Agriculture Research Center of the Mokiti Okada Foundation, the production of organic seeds is a great challenge. \u201cWe have a potential market, but it is still far from being profitable. What moves us is this huge loss in biodiversity in conventional production systems, in terms of varieties offered\u201d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">_________________________________<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>SEBRAE\u2019s Biodiversity Square <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">SEBRAE elected the Bioeconomy as one of the macro-segments to be worked on in 2017 \/ 2018, and organized a SEBRAE Biodiversity Square at Green Rio 2017, bringing together producers from several Brazilian states that are already practicing bioeconomy. In his presentation \u201cLatin America is more of a solution than a problem in the agenda for the future\u201d, Ingo Pl\u00f6ger showed how Latin America is in a position to benefit from Megatrends. Adrian Rodriguez (CEPAL) showed the bioeconomy in Latin America and the Caribbean from the perspective of the Water, Energy, Food Nexus. Adrian pointed out that there is a need for a better understanding of the bioeconomy\u2019s potential regarding sustainable development.\u00a0 Sergio Angheben gave a presentation on behalf of Itaipu Binacional, which also promotes the Water, Energy, Food Nexus. S\u00e9rgio presented the various actions that Itaipu already carries out in the Bioeconomy, such as renewable energy, biomass and organic farming. Based on Mikkelsen\u2019s speech, the other participants in the panel gave their contributions, applauded by the audience. Teresa Cor\u00e7\u00e3o\u2019s excellent presentation highlighted the need to value family farmers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">When Julio Cesar Barros, Coordinator of Green Areas of the Sub-secretariat for the Environment, mentioned that Rio de Janeiro has 1,600 schools that need a supply of organic products, Marcos Palmeira immediately proposed a partnership to supply schools in the Municipality of Rio de Janeiro.\u00a0 This proposal was applauded and a challenge was set during the panel. Mari\u00e2ngela Rossetto, Sebrae RJ, mentioned SEBRAE\u2019s interest in continuing the Healthy School Meal Project, very well represented by the Education Secretariat of Para\u00edba do Sul, one of the winners of the 2016 Healthy School Meal Award.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">F\u00e1bio Ramos, of S\u00edtio do Moinho, stressed that the education of consumers and of players in the dining-out segment is an indispensable factor to increase the presence of organic food in restaurants.\u00a0 Monica Rocha, of Comida do Amanh\u00e3 (Tomorrow\u2019s Food), spoke about the need to include the \u201cgame\u201d aspect of food when addressing the topic with children.
